Fortnite: What Is This Game Everyone Is Talking About?

April 5, 2018

Whether you have kids of your own or spend time around some in any capacity, chances are you've heard about Fornite. If you're anything like me, you have no idea what the heck it is. According to the internet, it's a free 100-player game where your character tries to be the last one standing.

Since that tells me nothing, I talked to someone in the office who plays often.

Here's what I got from that conversation:

  • Fortnite is one of the first cross-platform games you can play right now, meaning you're not limited to one gaming system. Kids can play it on their iPhone, iPad, computer, Xbox or Playstation.
  • It's free (hey I like that word) to play! Anyone can download and play Fortnite, but the way they generate money is through micro-purchases, or small incremental purchases that add up over time. So... basically you need to monitor what they're spending money on. I've heard that includes special character costumes -- like a bunny suit over Easter weekend. Sounds like a good investment.
  • It is the perfect mix between Minecraft and Call of Duty. Combining the building and creativeness of Minecraft, while also including the first person shooter aspect of Call of Duty. I have no idea what any of that means BUT if you're trying to sound hip, just drop some of those names!
  • Apparently it's also fun to watch other people play Fortnite on a system called Twitch. Get ready because I'm about to blow your mind: some of these players that kids are watching... they're making over six figures annually. BY PUBLICLY PLAYING A VIDEO GAME!
  • Fortnite is one of the fastest growing video games on the planet, but be careful not to let your kids play too long (his words, not mine). I suppose that goes for any video games. A colleague here who is a father of 3 Fortnite-obsessed boys says he gives each of them 90 minutes a night to play (based on their behavior). Games are in small 20-ish minute increments so they'll be able to play quite a few in that time slot.
  • This is a battle royal game, which means you fight others until you are the only player left alive. I'm sure you can tell by your kids shrieks and cheers whether or not they make it until the end.
  • Characters collect resources throughout the game which include:
    • Guns
    • Ammo
    • Building Materials
    • Traps
    • Shields
  • Fortnite has a player base of 45,000,000 active users and has even attracted big names such as Drake and Ju Ju Smith-Schuster.

So, there you have it. Hopefully you now have a better grasp on this game that is taking over the web!
