Is 'Joker 2' Happening? Sequel Uncertain Amid Conflicting Reports

November 20, 2019

Rumblings of a possible “Joker” sequel left many fans of the film with a big, red smile on their faces.

On Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter, citing anonymous sources, reported that “Joker” director Todd Phillips met with Warner Bros film chief Toby Emmerich to discuss the second installment of the highly successful DC origin film.

According to its sources, THR said Phillips would helm the second film and re-team with writer Scott Silver, while actor Joaquin Phoenix would reprise his role as Batman’s nemesis.

But don’t dust off your face paint and red suit just yet.

Deadline has called the rumors "click bait," according to anonymous "multiple inside sources."

According to the Deadline report, sources said no deals or negotiations have occurred between Phillips and Emmerich regarding a sequel to the film.

Calling it a “false story,” Deadline adds that, according to its sources, Phillips has not expressed any desire to oversee another DC character film at the moment.

So, for now, a “Joker” sequel is far from being a done deal and remains in a state of limbo.

That isn’t to say it won’t happen in the future, though.

Looking at it from a financial perspective, a second film makes all the sense in the world.

The gritty film is the fourth in the DC collection to gross over $1 billion, and it continues to rake in money overseas.

Only three other titles have accomplished such a feat including 2018's "Aquaman" ($1.15 billion), 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises" ($1.08 billion) and 2008's "The Dark Knight" ($1 billion).
