Bruce Springsteen Surprises 'Western Stars' Theatergoers in New Jersey

You never know when the Boss is going to show up

Who better to set the stage for Bruce Springsteen’s new concert film than the Boss himself?

As he’s wont to do in his New Jersey stomping grounds, Springsteen surprised fans with an appearance over the weekend. He showed up unannounced at a preview screening for “Western Stars” in Freehold to introduce the film.

“We knew we weren’t going to tour, so I tried to figure out a way to get the music to you as evocatively as I could, and so we ended up shooting the musical sections in the barn and the rest of our footage in Joshua Tree National Park,” Springsteen told the audience. "If you have applause, if there are any, I would save it for the end of the film because the editing and the pacing of the film has its own message.”

“Western Stars” features Springsteen performing the songs from his recent solo album of the same name. The film was directed by Thom Zimny along with Springsteen in his directorial debut.

“Bruce lives in the super rarified air of artists who have blazed new and important trails deep into their careers,” said Toby Emmerich of Warner Brothers. “With “Western Stars,” Bruce is pivoting yet again, taking us with him on an emotional and introspective cinematic journey, looking back and looking ahead. As one of his many fans for over 40 years, I couldn’t be happier to be a rider on this train with Bruce and Thom.”

“Western Stars” will officially debut in theaters on October 25.
