Willoughby South High School’s sports teams will soon have a new mascot.

Willoughby-Eastlake school officials announced yesterday plans to drop the Civil War-themed “Rebel” mascot, citing sensitivity to current controversies over Confederate monuments.

The school will retain the Rebels nickname while the district seeks community input on a new icon.
