Gift Cards Popular With Holiday Shoppers This Year

A majority of people plan to give gift cards as presents this holiday season. Fifty-eight percent of consumers surveyed by the National Retail Federation say they will give at least one gift card. Only clothing is more popular, to be given by 61-percent of shoppers. The average consumer will buy three gift cards worth about 46 dollars each.

Which cards can you expect in your stocking? Restaurant cards are expected to be given the most, followed by department store cards, American Express, Visa or MasterCard gift cards, and coffee shop cards.

But for those sticking with actual gifts – especially for kids – you’ll be happy to know that old favorites like Barbie and Legos will be the go-to toys for parents this holiday season. The National Retail Federation says 23-percent of people buying presents for girls have Barbie on their shopping list. Lego tops the lists of people buying for boys, at 15-percent.
