Today in music, [lastfm]Alanis Morissette[/lastfm] released her career defining album, Jagged Little Pill. It went on to sell over 30 million copies world-wide – making Morissette the first female Canadian to score a No.1 album in the US. Six of the twelve tracks featured on the album went on to become hits in the US (“You Oughta Know“, “Ironic“, “You Learn“, “Hand in My Pocket“, “Head over Feet“, and “All I Really Want“).

Morissette moved from Canada to L.A. to write Jagged…, where she met and began collaborating with musician Glen Ballard. Soon after her move, Alanis was robbed at gunpoint while alone at night. The event resulted in daily panic attacks and eventual hospitalization, creating in her an angst that Ballard encouraged her to let out in her songwriting.

While visitng Ballard, [lastfm]Red Hot Chili Peppers[/lastfm] bandmates Flea and Dave Navarro discovered Morissette’s music, and offered to lend their musical talents to her song, (famously written about a relationship gone sour with Full House star Dave Coulier) “You Oughta Know“.

Due to the famous duo’s involvement in the song, L.A. radio station KROQ began to play “You Oughta Know” and launched Jagged Little Pill into success.

Along with huge commercial success, Jagged Little Pill went on to win four Grammy awards.
